3 Common Risks of Riding a Motorcycle Leading to Accidents.
Every year there are approximately 2,000 motorcycle accidents in Louisiana. In many of these, the bikers are fatally injured.
Riding a motorcycle isn’t the same as driving a car. So its not surprising to find that the causes of motorcycle accidents, the injuries resulting from motorcycle accidents, and how liability is determined in these accidents are very different from those of car accidents.
Risks of Riding a Motorcycle.
Motorcycles are much smaller and lighter than cars. The rider is exposed and the bike itself is vulnerable to road conditions.
These characteristics, along with others, make motorcycle riding riskier than riding in a car. According to federal statistics, motorcycle accidents are 35 times more likely to result in death or serious injury than car accidents.
Here are only 3 risks common to many motorcycle accidents.
- Motorcycles are less stable than cars.
Because they usually only have 2 wheels, motorcycles are less stable than cars which have 4 wheels. This lack of stability is especially dangerous if the motorcyclist has to brake suddenly or swerve. In addition, some motorcycle accidents are caused by front wheel “wobble” that can occur at high speeds.
- Not as Visible as a Car.
The number one reason reported by drivers involved in an accident with a motorcycle for the accident is, “I didn’t see him.” Due to the smaller size of motorcycles, blind spots on cars and driver inattention, the lack of visibility of a motorcycle rider is a leading cause of accidents.
- High Risk Behavior.
Many motorcycle riders are younger men, between the ages of 20-30. They often ride lighter, more powerful motorcycles like sport and supersport bikes. These riders tend to be riskier drivers and the bikes, which are built for racing and modified for street use, tend to encourage speeding, fast accelerating, and other high-risk behavior.
Although not necessarily more frequent than car accidents, most motorcycle accidents are more likely to result in serious injury or death.
